The Danish Refugee Council (DRC) has been operational in Sudan since 2004, focusing primarily on the conflict in Darfur. The conflict is labeled by the United Nations as a 'protection crisis', due to the level and type of violence perpetrated against civilians. More than 6 million people are in need of humanitarian assistance in Sudan due to a series of inter-related issues, including multi-dimensional conflicts (such as struggles over essential and dwindling livelihoods and natural resources), criminality, insecurity, environmental conditions, weak social services and large scale displacement. More than 3.7 million people have been displaced from their homes, including nearly 670,000 who have fled to neighboring countries (Chad, South Sudan and Ethiopia) and nearly 3.1 million IDPs, primarily within Darfur. In the first months of 2015, alone, 70,000 people were newly displaced in Darfur. An escalation is evident in 2014 and 2015, with more than 2.55 Milion people being displaced in Darfur.
